Feel free to give those dancing shows a break, as M3GAN 2.0 does not have an end-credits scene of any kind. Blumhouse’s highly anticipated follow-up to 2022’s surprise breakout horror-comedy hit does indeed expand upon M3GAN’s (Jenna Davis and Amie Donald) in a wide variety of new and unexpected ways. Series star and M3GAN 2.0 producer Allison Williams even recently shared her hopes for a M3GAN trilogy. However, those wanting a mid or post-credits scene to tease the potential future of the franchise may be just as disappointed as Gemma (Allison Williams) and Cady (Violet McGraw) were when they found out their AI companion was a murderous sociopath.

‘M3GAN’ Was a Box-Office Success, but Will the Sequel Keep Up?

Produced on a reported budget of only $12 million, the original M3GAN movie stayed true to Blumhouse’s mission statement of low-budget, high-concept horror films, and that winning formula absolutely paid off. In large part thanks to becoming a viral, meme-worthy sensation, M3GAN went on to shatter box office expectations. Not only did it double its reported budget on its opening weekend alone, but it ultimately went on to achieve a worldwide gross 15 times that of the same budget, with an astounding worldwide total of $180 million.

How M3GAN 2.0 will fare at the box office remains to be seen, but the long-awaited sequel is going to have some very stiff competition. For starters, M3GAN 2.0 is opening directly alongside Joseph Kosinski‘s Top Gun: Maverick follow-up and Brad Pitt‘s latest ambitious star vehicle, F1: The Movie, which is already being praised as a technical marvel and a must-see theatrical experience. Additionally, M3GAN 2.0 is releasing on the sophomore weekend of another long-awaited horror sequel, 28 Years Later, which has already made back its reported production budget. Strangely enough, the trifecta of challenges is completed by another Universal property, with the release of Jurassic World Rebirth the week after M3GAN 2.0‘s debut. This doesn’t even account for the later July theater space set to be occupied by Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, both of which are being touted as the must-watch events of the summer.

What Is ‘M3GAN 2.0’ About?

M3GAN 2.0 picks up several years after the killer doll’s initial rampage, where brilliant engineer and robotics designer Gemma is trying to pave a better future for herself and her niece, Cady. To do this, Gemma has gone from a toy designer to an AI activist, trying to convince the world of the dangers it poses to the masses and how it should be regulated. Gemma’s fears are quickly substantiated when a government-backed robotic assassin called AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno) – created using some of M3GAN‘s old designs – goes rogue and begins enacting a sinister plan that could put Gemma and Cady in harm’s way.

Things get even more complicated when Gemma discovers that her former creation isn’t as dead as she once thought, with M3GAN insisting that she is the only one who can care for and protect Cady. Even though M3GAN could very well be a threat to both her and Cady, Gemma soon realizes that the violent automaton might be the only force on Earth that can defeat AMELIA. With great reluctance, Gemma builds a new state-of-the-art body for M3GAN, and she’ll have to find out for herself if her potty-mouthed creation really has turned a new leaf or if she’s the same old killer robot from the first film.

Will ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Get a Sequel?

Given that M3GAN 2.0 is a clear homage to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, it wouldn’t be unusual for another M3GAN movie to continue the torrid tale of everyone’s favorite dancing robot. Nothing has been confirmed yet despite expressed interest from some of the creative team, and it’s ultimately all going to come down to how well it performs at the box office. That said, without giving anything away, the ending of M3GAN 2.0 certainly leaves the door open for another installment.

While M3GAN’s future after the second installment is a mystery, it’s not the only Blumhouse sequel set to release by the end of 2025. Come this spooky October season, Ethan Hawke‘s The Grabber will rise from the dead in The Black Phone 2, with everyone’s favorite new serial killer entering his Freddy Krueger era for the cold and calculated sequel. Also on the way, just in time for Christmas, is Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, with that film’s animatronics set to give M3GAN a run for her money as the scariest killer robot.

M3GAN 2.0 crawls into theaters on Friday, June 27, 2025.
