Korean musical “Maybe Happy Ending” has won big at the 78th Tony Awards!

On June 8 (local time), “Maybe Happy Ending” snagged six Tony Awards, the most awards scored by a single production for the night. First held in 1947, the Tony Awards recognizes excellence in live Broadway theater.

In addition to winning Best Musical, “Maybe Happy Ending” also won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Darren Criss), Best Direction of a Musical (Michael Arden), Best Book of a Musical (Will Aronson and Hue Park), Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre (Music: Will Aronson, Lyrics: Will Aronson and Hue Park), and Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Dane Laffrey and George Reeve).

The musical was also nominated in four additional categories including Best Costume Design of a Musical (Clint Ramos), Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Ben Stanton), Best Sound Design of a Musical (Peter Hylenski), and Best Orchestrations (Will Aronson).

“Maybe Happy Ending” is a musical that takes place in the future and follows the love story of Oliver and Claire, who are robots made to help humans.

A collaboration piece between Hue Park and Will Aronson, “Maybe Happy Ending” is an original Korean musical that was first showcased in 2016 at a theater which seated approximately 300 people. The musical achieved gradual success in Korea, receiving critical acclaim and selling out shows with popular cast members including Jeon Mi Do, Jung Moon Sung, Park Jin Joo, and more.

From the early production stages, an English version of the musical was also prepared in tandem, and the musical made its Broadway debut in 2024 at the Belasco Theatre, seating approximately 1000 people.
