At their discharge ceremony, fans picked up on his shaking hands and other mannerisms indicating he was going through many emotions.

During his first livestream, he shared his personal struggles of insomnia and mental health issues that he dealt with in the military.

Soon after, a viral article made it’s way into Korean media, titled: “RM Stressed Over the NewJeans Controversy? ‘There Were Times I Didn’t Sleep for Three Days.’”

On June 10, RM held a live broadcast to celebrate his discharge from the military (…) RM shared, ‘Military life was very tough. Not just the military itself, but I really struggled with sleep,’ and confessed, ‘It was the first time I ever had trouble sleeping like that.’

He continued, ‘Around April or May last year, a lot was happening at the company (HYBE). That’s when I developed insomnia,’ adding, ‘There was a time when I didn’t sleep a single minute for 78 hours. There was just too much going on outside.’

The period RM referred to—April 2023—was when tensions between HYBE and former ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin were at their peak. At the time, HYBE launched an audit and filed a criminal complaint against Min for alleged breach of trust regarding management control over ADOR.

Reflecting on that time, RM said, ‘I had to do my military duties, but I couldn’t function without sleep. I eventually started taking sleeping pills, but they caused side effects, and I couldn’t live normally.’
